Why was the Battle of the Somme considered a failure for the British by some historians?
Tomtit [17]
The Battle was primarily a battle between the Germans and the British.

The offensive was not effective and achieved very little for the allies. The British only advanced a few miles, and the German lines held.

The offensive did not break the stalemate and resulted in massive casualties for both sides.

What was the outcome Glorious Revolution?
Nana76 [90]

Answer:

Correct answer is William and Mary became joint monarchs and James II was overthrown without  bloodshed.

Explanation:

First option is the correct one as William and Mary were called by British Parliament to take the throne of England, but with the obligation to respect Bill of Rights. James II as the last ruler of Stuart dynasty left the country.

Second option is not correct because as we have said they were called to come to England, they didn't invade it.

Third option is not correct as two of them ruled England for a certain period of time.

Fourth option is not correct as England (Great Britain) is still a monarchy.

Which area of the map was explored by the Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa in the 1500s? A) 1 B) 2 C) 3 D) 4
Fed [463]

Answer:

C. 3

Explanation:

Spanish explorer and conquistador Vasco Núñez de Balboa was the first European explorer to see the eastern shores of the Pacific Ocean. In 1511, he was made captain general and interim governor of Darién, the first Spanish settlement in Panama, by king Ferdinand II. The Spanish got news about a fabulously rich Indian kingdom with much gold to the south (probably the Inca empire), a story that encouraged Spanish greed.  In 1513, without waiting for reinforcements, Núñez de Balboa  headed 190 Spanish soldiers and numerous Indian porters and set to explore southwards, crossing dense jungles, swamps and mountains. There he saw the shores of the Pacific. As a reward for his discovery of the Mar del Sur (Southern Sea, the Pacific), the king appointed him Adelantado (envoy).

Why did the Mayans and Egyptians have a lot of similarities
masha68 [24]

The Egyptians and Mayans both used symbols to convey meaning in written language. However, the similarity pretty much stops there. This is remarkable, though, considering the fact that these cultures – millennia and worlds apart – developed similar writing systems.

The Egyptian hieroglyphics didn’t have punctuation and they were written in long lines of script. They were found on everything from paper, to stone, to jewelry. Reading the glyphs, you go from left to right. Egyptian glyphs are divided into phonograms - representing sounds and ideograms - representing ideas or objects.

The Mayans’ system used picture blocks to convey meaning. Their glyphs were mostly on stone. Reading the glyphs is very different from reading Egyptian glyphs. You go left to right and read a “pair” of glyphs and then go down to the next line and read the next pair. They form a sort of a zig-zag pattern. Thus, if reading, you would read block 1A, then block 1B. Then you go to the next line and read 2A, then block 2B. Mayan glyphs are divided into logograms to express meaning or syllabograms to represent sounds.
