Las transformaciones químicas en las células tienen una relación directa con nuestra dieta, ya que todo lo que comemos puede dividirse en 3 grandes grupos de macromoléculas: carbohidratos (o glúcidos), grasas (o lípidos), y proteínas.

Estas 3 moléculas son fundamentales para nuestro metabolismo y todas son degradadas por nuestro sistema con distintos fines, pero mayoritariamente son usadas como <u>fuente de energía</u> para los distintos procesos celulares (como la bomba de sodio/potasio o la contracción muscular).

De estas tres macromoléculas, la más usada para la generación de energía es la glucosa, uno de los carbohidratos más abundantes en nuestra dieta.

Además, ya que los productos generados a partir de la degradación de la glucosa son luego utilizados en el ciclo de Krebs y en la fosforilación oxidativa (con fines energéticos), <em>la cantidad de glúcidos consumidos impacta directamente en la producción de dióxido de carbono</em>, que luego será eliminado por los pulmones cuando exhalemos. Algo similar ocurre con el <em>consumo de proteínas y la generación de urea</em> (un desecho formado por la degradación de esta macromolécula).
