We can do anything to an equation as long as we do it to both sides
remember the associative property of addition

a+(b+c)=(a+b)+c
so
12+(7+m)=(12+7)+m=19+m

19+m=30
minus 19 both sides
19-19+m=30-19
0+m=11
m=11

The domain of a certain function are all possible values of x that are applicable to the function or can make the function true. For this certain function, the domain is from the time that the book was released to the time that the sales was also zero due to steady decline in sales.

Two brothers build a pyramid-shaped fort. If the fort is 8 feet wide at its base, what expression could be used to calculate the
melisa1 [442]
Answer: An expression for the height is: H = (3/64)V

To start with, we will assume that it is a square pyramid, meaning all the sides of the base are 8 feet wide.

Now, we need the formula for the volume of a square pyramid.

V = BH/3

We know the area of the base, it is 8 x 8 = 64, so we can input that.

V = 64H/3   We can multiply by 3/64 to find an expression for the height of the fort.

(3/64)V = H

a. Determine all bijections from the {1,2,3} into {a,b,c}. b. Determine all bijections from {1, 2, 3} into {a,b,c,d}.
avanturin [10]

Part A

There are 6 bijections from {1,2,3} to {a,b,c}. This is effectively the same as asking the question "how many ways are there to arrange {a,b,c} where order matters?" We use a factorial to answer this question.

3 factorial = 3! = 3*2*1 = 6

You can also use a permutation, which is composed of factorials, to get the same answer.

======================================================

Part B

There are no bijections from {1,2,3} to {a,b,c,d}. Why is this? Because a bijection has two properties: it must be one-to-one, and it must be onto. The term "onto" in mathematics means "every value in the range is targeted". In the case of the range {a,b,c,d} it is not possible for each value to show up. This is because there are only three items in the domain {1,2,3}. You'll always be one letter short.

As you can probably guess, a bijection is only possible if and only if n(D) = n(R), where D and R are the domain and range respectively. The notation n(D) represents the count or number of items in set D.
