The Populist Party supported many initiatives that eventually were adopted by progressives and passed through legislation. Direct election of senators, a graduated income tax, and railroad reform all became a reality by 1930. Socialist economic aims, however, were far too radical for most Americans. Two reforms championed by the party were civil rights for all and government protection of workers’ rights to unionize.
