If you were to place fertilized sea urchin eggs in a hypotonic tank, what would happen to them and why?

Biology

Answer:

The eggs will burst because water from the tank will flow into them

Explanation:

A hypotonic solution is a solution that contains less concentration of solutes in comparison with its external solution. OSMOSIS is the process by which water moves from a region of lower solute concentration (higher water concentration) to a region of higher solute concentration (lower water concentration) via a semi-permeable membrane.

According to this question, fertilized eggs of a sea urchin are placed in a hypotonic tank solution i.e. The eggs are hypertonic to the solution in the tank. Based on the osmotic principle, water will move from the tank solution (less solute/more water) into the egg (more solute/less water) via the membrane of the egg. This will eventually lead to the eggs BURSTING.
