erik [133]

Squanto was a pequot who taught colonists how to survive. They were the Native American of the Patuxet tribe, also known as Tisquantum.

Squantos served as an interpreter and guide for the Pilgrim immigrants at Plymouth during their first winter in the New World. Around 1580, Squanto was born close to Plymouth, Massachusetts. The details of his early life are unknown. Thomas Hunt, an English explorer, kidnapped him in 1614 and took him to Spain, where he was sold into slavery. Squanto managed to flee and eventually made it back to North America in 1619. After that, he went back to the Patuxet area, where in the 1620s he worked as an interpreter and guide for the Pilgrim colony in Plymouth. He passed away at Chatham, Massachusetts, in November 1622
