Marilyn in 'The Cold Equation' is a GOOD person.
Marilyn is an innocent but ignorant eighteen years old girl who had not seeing her brother for ten years. She believed hiding in the Stardust ship, which is going to the place where here brother lives is a good mean of seeing her brother again. She had good thoughts and good intention but was not aware of how her presence in the ship will negatively affect and jeopardize the lives of others on aboard the ship.
Here is an excerpt from her first day:
“All went well, and I got to Georgetown one evening very tired. Was kindly welcomed, slept in my narrow bed with two other roommates, and on the morrow began my new life by seeing a poor man die at dawn, and sitting all day between a boy with pneumonia and a man shot through the lungs. A strange day, but I did my best; and when I put mother’s little black shawl round the boy while he sat up panting for breath, he smiled and said, “You are real motherly, ma’am.” I felt as if I was getting on. The man only lay and stared with his big black eyes, and made me very nervous. But all were well behaved; and I sat looking at the twenty strong faces as they looked back at me,—hoping that I looked “motherly” to them; for my thirty years made me feel old, and the suffering round me made me long to comfort every one.”
In the novel "<em>The Old Man and the Sea" </em>by<em> Ernest Hemingway</em>, there are many images.
- Line 9: Image of number 40The repetitive use of the number forty throughout the novel. After 40 days ( which is exactly the duration it took Christ to live again) Manolin's parents decided that <em>"the old man was now and definitely salao, which is the worst form of unlucky"</em> The complete paragraph emphasizes Santiago's being unlucky. For example, "<em>It made the boy sad to see the old man come in each day with his skiff empty."</em>
- Line 10: image of old age and eyesAt first, the author shows his main character as defeated and old. He refers to his scars as <em>"old as erosions in a fishless desert". </em>But, there are also images of Santiago's eyes, that in contrast to his old body are shown as " <em>...they were the same color as the sea and were cheerful and undefeated".</em>
- Line 30: the sea tha main character of the book, Santiago, represents the sea as a woman, "always thought of her as feminine and as something that gave or withheld great favors, and if she did wild or wicked things it was because she could not help them"<em>. </em> He feels that he complements himself with the sea ( man and woman intertiwined)
- Line 37: a turtleSantiago compares himself to a turtle ( he has worked at a turtle ship before) He says "<em>most people are heartless about turtles because a turtle's heart will beat for hours after he has been cut up and butchered... I have such a heart too and my hands and feet are like theirs"</em>

The main characters represent different branches of the church. On the island of the Houyhnhnms, Gulliver encounters vile creatures known as Yahoos. Swift uses these creatures to satirize the evils of human virtue. These repulsive creatures are enslaved by horses, which ironically symbolize the ideals of humanity. Swift dehumanizes the human race by amplifying the cruelty and corruption that were characteristic of his society.
