Many dark romantic themes are reflected in this excerpt. Most notably mystical presence, the overwhelming power of nature, dread and discomfort, etc.
It would cause the reader to think that too. and it could confuse the reader if the assumption is contradicted later on in the story.

The theme that the story has is the fact that it is always more fun to share as well as to include others.

What is the theme of a story?

The theme of a story is the term that is used to describe the message that the story is trying to send out to the people that are either reading the story or also listening to it.
The theme here is about the need to share what you have with others. After the trouble that one of the boys faced with the ball, he found out that it was better to be enjoyed if they all would play it together.
In the story, we can see that Scott alone had access to the ball. Even though it seemed like the ball belonged to the other boys. He had it all to himself and wouldn't let the others touch it. But while playing ball alone, one can be faced with boredom because it is a game for several persons. Hence when one of the boys suggested that they played together, he accepted for that to happen.
