His law came to be known as the Corpus Juris Civilis. The Byzantine Empire was part of the Roman Empire and followed the beliefs of Christianity which became the national religion. They built churches and monuments with a painting of religious expression. Paintings and mosaics in Hagia Sophia show the figures of Christ, the Virgin Mary, saints along the emperors.
