Answer:

Roosevelt includes the second paragraph to serve as a rebuttal for the following counterclaim:

D. A world free from fear is not possible in the near future.

Explanation:

In the first paragraph of the excerpt, Roosevelt speaks of "freedom from fear" and explains that it refers to the safety one feels when one knows there aren't enough weapons in any country for an attack to happen. Simply put, it would be the reduction of the production and possession of weapons, which would ensure no more wars would happen.

<u>The second paragraph of the excerpt serves to rebut a possible counterclaim. The very first sentence reveals what it is: "That is no vision of a distant millennium." Roosevelt is answering the possible counterclaim that such a freedom cannot be achieved in the near future. According to him, it is possible to be attained "in our own time and generation." Therefore, letter D is the best option:</u>

<u>"D. A world free from fear is not possible in the near future" is the counterclaim being rebutted.</u>

Where does the opening chapter take place in The Scarlet Letter?.
gtnhenbr [62]

The Scarlet Letter takes place in a Puritan town during the 17th century.

Summary of this novel:

The Scarlet Letter begins with a lengthy introduction to how the book was written. The unnamed narrator was a customs surveyor in Salem, Massachusetts. In the customs attic, he found many documents, including a manuscript bundled with scarlet gold embroidered cloth in the shape of an "A".

The work of an early surveyor, this manuscript details events that occurred some 200 years before the time of the narrator. When the narrator loses his customs post, he decides to write a fictional account of the events recorded in the manuscript. The Scarlet Letter is the final product.

The story begins in 17th-century Boston, then a Puritan settlement. A young woman, Hester Prynne, was brought out of the city prison with her little daughter Pearl in her arms and a scarlet "A" on her chest. A man in the crowd tells her elderly bystander that Hester is being punished for adultery. Her husband, Hester, a scholar much older than her, sent her ahead to America, but she never made it to Boston.

The Scarlet Letter takes place in a Puritan town during the 17th century.
