The role of the conductor has actually GREATLY changed since the Baroque Era.
In the Baroque Era, much was different. The music was meant to be played the EXACT way that it is written on the score. The conductor was there to ensure all musicians were on the correct tempo. They also had to make sure all of the musicians were playing the right style.
In our Era of music, our conductors are still there to keep us on tempo and Help us play CORRECTLY. However now, all musicians are able to put their own feelings into the piece that they are playing. The conductor has to channel that feeling of either happiness or anger or sometimes sorrow, though the energy that they give of to the orchestra.
Not much has changed in that specific area of the orchestra otherwise. According to my class that is.
But the instruments are a whole different thing.
Well anyway hope this helped!!

Drawing from life is wonderful because you get to fully experience your subject. Compare the difference between drawing from a photograph of a person and drawing that person in real life. If you draw from direct observation, you would get to talk to the person, hear their voice, and learn about their personality.
