In order to get x by itself you need to first add 5 to both sides. Once you do that it should look something like this

4x-5 +5 = 3+5

-5 and +5 both cancel out just leaving you with 4x, and 3+5=8. So now it should look like this.

4x = 8

Now, you just have to divide 4 to both sides

4x/4 = 8/4

Both 4's cancel out leaving you with x and 8 divided by 4 equals to 2.

x = 2
