It was Edward III of England.  His claim was based on his mother Queen Isabela  who was from France.  He was disqualified because he came from the female side of the family.   Later on various English monarchs would claim the French throne and this would launch the 100 Years War.

In the Battle of Trenton (December 26), Washington defeated a formidable garrison of Hessian mercenaries before withdrawing. A week later he returned to Trenton to lure British forces south, then executed a daring night march to capture Princeton on January 3. The victories reasserted American control of much of New Jersey and greatly improved the morale and unity of the colonial army and militias.

He thought the government would become too powerful, and it would take away the rights of the people themselves. This would lead to the loss of separation of power, and eventually, could create a tyranny or monarchy much like the one Americans had sacrificed their lives to fight against.
