X = # of cans of tomatoes, y = # of cans of corn

x + y = 32.....y = 32 - x
0.80x + 0.40y = 18

0.80x + 0.40(32 - x) = 18
0.80x + 12.8 - 0.40x = 18
0.80x - 0.40x = 18 - 12.8
0.40x = 5.2
x = 5.2 / 0.40
x = 13 <=== 13 cans of tomatoes were bought

leaving (32 - 13) = 19 cans of corn bought

the length of a rectangle is two feet greater then twice its width if the primeter is 25 find the width
Mademuasel [1]

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

Perimeter is simply length + width. They gave us that the length is 2 feet plus 2 times the width:

25=(2w+2)+W

Subtract 2 from both sides to get 23 = 2w + w

Combine like terms to get 23 = 3w

Divide by 3 to get w=7 \frac{2}3} feet

If PQ=8 and Q lies at -13 where could P be located?
choli [55]

Answer:

In the given figure the point on segment PQ is twice as from P as from Q is. What is the point? Ans is (2,1).

Step-by-step explanation:

There is really no need to use any quadratics or roots.

( Consider the same problem on the plain number line first.  )

How do you find the number between 2 and 5 which is twice as far from 2 as from 5?

You take their difference, which is 3. Now splitting this distance by ratio 2:1 means the first distance is two thirds, the second is one third, so we get

4=2+23(5−2)

It works completely the same with geometric points (using vector operations), just linear interpolation: Call the result R, then

R=P+23(Q−P)

so in your case we get

R=(0,−1)+23(3,3)=(2,1)

Why does this work for 2D-distances as well, even if there seem to be roots involved? Because vector length behaves linearly after all! (meaning |t⋅a⃗ |=t|a⃗ | for any positive scalar t)

Edit: We'll try to divide a distance s into parts a and b such that a is twice as long as b. So it's a=2b and we get

s=a+b=2b+b=3b

⇔b=13s⇒a=23s

It is 4:12 p.m. Emma's mom will be home from work in 70 minutes, and Emma has gymnastics lessons at 6:00 p.m. How much time will
Mademuasel [1]
We know that her mom will be home in 70 minutes and if its 4:12 then that means that her mom will be home at 5:22 because 70 minutes is 10 minutes more than an hour. If her gymnastics lessons are at 6:00 then she has 38 minutes in-between the time her mom gets home and her gymnastics lesson.

Hope this helped!
