Hans Christian Andersen was the author of short story 'The Ugly Duckling'. Andersen was the one and only child to his parents. He has been a sensitive child growing up. But he had to face harsh realities of life when his father died and he had to take the responsibility of his family.

He had to go through many hardships and face cruel remarks. As a sensitive child, Andersen must have responded to cruel remarks through his optimism and desire to pursue his dreams regardless of people say. It was through Andersen's optimism and persistence that he was able to become a good writer.
