China's one child policy was formed in 1979 with the aim to curb the increasing population of the country. Considered world's one of the most controversial methods to control population, it permitted couples to have only one child. As the traditional Chinese society preferred male child over female child, one child policy especially hit a blow to female population. Parents started to abort or abandon females because they wanted to have a male child and government did not allow a second child.

This move created a huge imbalance in sex ratio. Number of males increased drastically with respect to number of women. Males were not aborted and did not face abandonment as they were highly valued in society. The program was relaxed in 2013 and allowed rural couples and ethnic minorities to have 2 children and it was finally scraped off in 2015.
