C. Insulating the body

Insulating the body is not a function of a protein.

Lipids are macromolecules which provide insulation.
<span>A macromolecule is a large molecule. There are four groups of macromolecules: carbohydrates, proteins, nucleic acids and lipids. Lipids consist of glycerol and fatty acids and are constructed from fats, oils, waxes, phospholipids and steroids. A lipid's function is to insulate the body and provide warmth in cold conditions. It can be concluded that a person with very little body fat gets very cold easily and a person with a lot of body fat gets very warm very quickly.

Insulating the body is not the function of proteins. It is one of the main functions of fats. Therefore, option (C) is correct.

Further Explanation:

The biomolecules perform various important functions in the body of an organism. Proteins, fats, nucleic acid, and carbohydrates are the main classes of biomolecules. These molecules have carbon (C), oxygen (O), hydrogen (H), and nitrogen (N) as their major components. Proteins are the complex and large biomolecules made up of amino acids (monomer units). Different proteins have different sequence of amino acids in their structure and these amino acids are linked to one another by peptide bonds.

The amino acid sequence (primary structure) defines the three-dimensional shape of the proteins and its function as well. The proteins carry out most of the work in the cell that includes repair and structure maintenance, energy, transportation and storage of molecules, enzymes, hormones, and antibodies. The proteins provide support and structure to the cell. They help in the movement of the body also. Actin is an example of structural protein.

Some proteins (like ferritin) binds to the small molecules and ions (like iron) and help in their storage in the body. Antibodies are the small protein molecules that protect the body against foreign particles.  Enzymes are the proteins that take part in several biochemical reactions taking place in the body. The proteins help in the breakdown of food and thus, provide energy to the body. The example of messenger proteins that help in signal transmission and coordinating biological activities is hormone.

Fat (lipid) is another class of biomolecules that plays a vital role in insulating the body against shock and maintaining healthy skin and body temperature. The fats help in storing energy and signalling too.

12. How can water move from one tracheid into a neighboring cell?
olganol [36]

Answer and Explanation:

12. The water has a lower osmotic pressure than the cell sap of the root hairs. Due to the osmotic difference water is drawn by osmosis across the cell wall and cell membrane into root hairs. Water moves by osmosis into adjacent cortex cells and their osmotic pressure is lowered drawing water by osmosis. Water passes to the successive cortex cells and through the endodermis to the xylem vessels. At the leaves, the xylem passes into the petiole and then into the veins of the leaf. Water leaves the veins and enters the cells of the spongy and palisade layers.

13. Food and other manufactured material are translocated by the phloem. They enter the sieve elements through plasmodesmata connecting them to adjacent companion cells which are sites of high metabolic activity. The manufactured food are translocated through sieve tube along the cytoplasmic strands.
