The main reason for the migration was the discriminatory treatment that the southern government and white citizens gave to the African American community. This made it really hard for them to obtain jobs, educations, and safety under the law.

The African American community heard that the Northern States generally treated the minorities better compared to the Southern States. So, many of them decided to seek new opportunity by migrating to the Northern states.
