In the US and India, the common reaction was for many of the fundamentalists to enter the government in an attempt to bring religion back into it. In the US, some had said that they were on the edge of a moral abyss. The fundamentalists wanted to get some of the Christian values back into the country. The process was similar in India, only with Hindu and a few different details.
