Feudal Japan was isolated from the rest of the world, in contrast with feudal Europe, for whom trade and cooperation with other continents was still necessary in order to survive. There were other subtler differences too, however, for example Knights in Europe were rewarded for service with land and by gaining control over the peasants in an area. The Japanese equivalent, Samurai, were paid a salary and not rewarded with land.
