The direction of movement of both are perpendicular to each other

Let us say Alice's speed = x mph

then speed of Lisa = x- 9 mph

The distance traveled by Lisa in 1 hour = 1 times ( x-9 ) = x-9 miles

the distance traveled by Alice in 1 hour = 1 times x = x miles

the distance between them is : the length of the hypotaneous of the triangle with perpendicular sides being x and x-9

That is : ( x^2 + ( x-9)^2 ) ^(1/2) which is given to be equal to 65

x^2 + ( x-9)^2 = ( 65)^2

x^2 + x^2 + 9^2 - 2* 9 x = 4225

2x ^2 - 18x = 4225 - 9^2

2x^2 - 18x = 4144

dividing each term by 2

x^2 - 9x = 2072

x^2 - 9x - 2072 = 0

we plug a= 1 b= -9 c=-2072 in the quadratic formula

x= [-b +/- ( b^2 - 4ac ) ]/ 2a

x= [ 9 +/- ( (-9)^2 - 4 ( 1)( -2072) ] / 2* 1

x= 50.24 miles /hour

Answer : Alice's average speed is 50.24 miles.

Shannon graphed the system of equations.
ehidna [41]
All you need to do is plug -5 into the second equation and you see it is near (-5, -8). When plugged into the top, you get (-5, -27/4) which comes out to ABOUT -6.75 for the Y value. The closest is actually a tie. The first option is .8 from the first and .45 from the second leading in a total distance of 1.25. The second, which is the fellow answer, is 1.2 from the first and .05 from the second, leading to 1.25 away.

The third, which is next closest is 1.8 from the first and .55 from the second leading to a distance of over 2 from the optimal, so only the first two are answers.

taurus [48]

Answer:

B) 0.85

Step-by-step explanation:

By definition, complementary angles add to 90 degrees.

The given angle 58 degrees is complementary to 90-58 = 32 degrees. The two angles 58 and 32 add to 90.

Therefore, cos(32) = 0.848 = 0.85

It took Alice 6 5/6 hours to drive to her grandparents' house for Thanksgiving. On the way home, she ran into traffic and it too
salantis [7]

Time taken to drive to her grandparents house = 6 5/6  hours

We convert this mixed into improper fraction, we get = 41/6 hours

Time taken to drive to her grandparents house = 41/6 hours

Time taken to drive back = 8 2/9 hours

We convert this mixed into improper fraction, we get = 74/9 hours

Time taken to drive back = 74/9 hours

Difference between the two = 74/9 - 41/6  = (148-123)/18 = 25/18 hours = 1 7/18 hours

Therefore it took 1 7/18 hours longer to drive back.
