The empire's third emperor, Ashoka, sincerely believed that religion could save it, but it also caused it to fall apart, and Buddhists seek to achieve nirvana by pursuing the direction of the Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, who set out on a journey for Enlightenment in the sixth century BC.
