When our own immune system defends us against a pathogen, this is known as active immunity. Our immune system develops active immunity when exposed to a potential disease-causing substance (i.e., pathogen). B and T lymphocytes with the ability to recognize a particular pathogen make up immunologic memory. There are two reasons memory cells are important. They first help our immune systems react swiftly.
