fMRI is an acronym for magnetic resonance imaging that is one of the most widely performed exams in the world at the most modern medical centers and has revolutionized the diagnosis of various diseases, used in virtually all medical specialties and by patients of all ages, even by babies.

Through magnetic resonance imaging, it was possible to recognize a specific site of the brain, called the "fusiform area of faces" (or FFA), in the lower posterior part of the brain. This area is enabled only when we think we saw a face. Even if only one neck supporting a gray circle is shown to us, FFA is activated. If we confuse an object with a face, too. However, if we confuse a face with an object, nothing happens. Thus, it was possible to conclude that FFA is an area correlated with recognizing faces.
