Factors that affect population in the natural world include; availability of food, water, shelter, space, competition for resources, predation, as well as disease.

These factors also affect human population resulting in an increase, decrease or stability in population.

Regarding decrease in population, factors like competition for scarce resources has resulted in wars which greatly reduced human population. Also disease outbreaks, droughts, famines, etc have resulted in decrease in population.

Availability of food, water, shelter and space on the other hand makes for an increase in population by increasing the birth rate, reducing competition and bringing stability.

In some other instances, overtime, there is a balance between birth and death rate, so human population will remain relatively unchanged at these times.
