Genes can be transferred in bacteria through the following processes: Transformation, Transduction and Conjugation.

Transformation: It's when bacteria incorporate genetic material present on the environment. This genetic material it's left in the environment from previous bacteria that died. Certain bacteria like Bacillus, Neisseria and Pneumococcus use this process.

Conjugation: It's when bacteria cells transfer genetic material between  them in direct contact. The transferred Dna is often beneficial to the recipient because those genes can carry antibiotic resistance, the ability to use new metabolites or xenobiotic tolerance.

transduction -  It's when there is a injection of foreign DNA by a bacteriophage virus into a bacteria. Transduction does not require physical contact between the virus and the bacteria. After the virus DNA injection, the bacteria will work to replicate the virus DN

Three modes of genetic transfer between bacterial cells are Transformation,Transduction and Conjugation. The phenomenon by which DNA isolated from one type of cell, when introduced into another type is able to bestow some of its properties into the latter, is referred to as transformation. It was confirmed by Griffith with his experiments on bacteria Streptococcus pneumonia. The transfer of genetic material from one bacterium to another through bacteriophage is called transduction. The unidirectional transfer of DNA from one cell to another through a cytoplasmic bridge is called conjugation. The process is equivalent to sexual mating in eukaryotes.
