Forced labor persisted after the Civil War because it was a crime in the south for any farm worker to search for employment from a new employer without permission from the old employer. This law only applied to Blacks resulting in countless black southerners falling victim to a brutal system of forced labor
Because of there traveling around non local areas, they were able to be vulnerable to new cultures and maybe languages. This allowed social mobility because they learned a new flow and new way of communicating.
By 1920 they had the vote, and from the 1860s onwards they were making slow but steady progress towards that. I’m pretty sure they gained a lot of economic mobility during this time.
