Alex Haley's Roots: The Saga of an American Family encouraged black Americans to explore their past and helped to popularize oral history and family history in the United States. His writing reminds us that oral history recording taps into a vast, rich reservoir of oral traditions sustained through family, community and national memories. As a boy, Alex Haley spent his summers on his grandmother's front porch in Henning, Tennessee. listening to her and her sisters tell stories of the family's history back through the days of slavery. The "Furthest–Back person" they spoke of was an ancestor they called "the African," who was kidnapped in his native country, shipped to Annapolis, Maryland, and sold into slavery. He remembered hearing:"Yeah, boy, that African say his name was 'Kin-tay'; he say the banjo was 'ko,' an' the river 'Kamby-Bolong,' an' he was off choppin' some wood to make his drum when they grabbed 'im!"These stories stayed with young Alex throughout his life. And he became obsessed with finding his family's roots in Africa. With the help of some friends and a linguist from West Africa, he learned that some of the words in his grandmother's stories were like Mandinka words (a language spoken by some tribes), and that the river she spoke of as 'Kamby Bolong' was probably the Gambia River. Alex knew that he must get to the Gambia River. With the help of Gambian officials, he learned that a griot, or oral historian, knew the history of a Kin-tay family. Could this be his own family? Alex Haley began his own trip up the Gambia River to find out.

Which thematic statement is best demonstrated by the events of Shakespeare's The Tempest
Tanya [424]

The thematic statement that is best described by Shakespeare’s The Tempest is B) Even in a new place with new people, travelers never escape their old problems.

The premise of releasing people in a inhospitable land where they are the mercy of human nature itself is a revelation: the characters may be exposed to several situations in which opportunity is given for them to behave in disagreement with their societal roles, however, that never takes place and they still act according to what society demands and expects of them. Prospero intends to recover his title, in spite of possessing an entire island to himself and a spirit at his beck and call, because that is what society has taught him to reach for. Miranda and Ferdinand do not consumate their passion when nobody is there to halt them, because refraining is what society dictates that they must do. Caliban, Trinculo and Stephano do not manage to ascend socially or gain power and freedom, because society exercises its control over them. Most notably and tellingly, upon shipwrecking and finding himself stranded on a remote island, Gonzalo fantasizes about a somewhat utopian society that he never manages to make come true in the play, perhaps because all the characters are either conformed or confined to their roles.

In short: if a fish is taken out of water, it is still a fish, that behaves as a fish does, and deals with the predicaments that a fish must face, even out of his element.

Why is it important to protect the environment?
Rashid [163]
When it comes to saving the environment there are many things that we can do to help. There are tons of ways that you can live a sustainable life and help to protect the environment.

Our environment is what houses and helps our ecosystem grow and thrive. Without protecting and taking care of our environment we’re putting so many lives at danger such as animals, plants and crops, and even our own.

All of the ecosystems that make up our environment are deeply connected. One change to an ecosystem could completely change the dynamic that has been created. There are many ways that you can help our ecosystem as well as protecting the environment.

One of the major reasons why we need to work towards protecting the environment is because it helps to protect humanity. If we didn’t have our environment, then we wouldn’t have a place to live or resources to live off of.

Right now our air, food, and even water is being polluted because of many different factors. Luckily, natural gas in the US is on the rise and a great resource to use to help fuel our homes, businesses, schools, factories, and so much more. This is a change that we should be pushing for if we want to create a better environment.

Another huge factor that is at risk if we don’t protect our environment is the forests around us that we use to survive. The forests have many natural resources that we generally use on a daily basis.

When you live a more sustainable life then you’re helping the forests that we use to live. Our forests can help give us timber, wood, rubber, and even essential oils.

When you’re first thinking about reasons why you should protect the environment you should know that it is your moral obligation to do so. As a human who lives on earth, it is your responsibility to make sure that it is protected.

Overall, when it comes to answering the questions why should we protect the environment, there are many reasons! This is the only place we have to live and we should want to treat it with care and respect.
