The Freedmen's Bureau was established in March of 1865 to help freed people achieve economic stability and secure political freedoms. Many white Southerners, as well as President Andrew Johnson, challenged the Bureau's legitimacy, sparking racial violence in the South and the ultimate failure of the Bureau.

However, they lost so we all had to leave our lands leading up to this”

“Many of the children and the oldest tribe members have died. They had died from the diseases that people had, there was no food, the temperatures that we faced, along with horrible treatment. This has affected us because we don’t have much space to do anything so the diseases spread like wild fire.”
