He meant that the huns were well-trained Cavalries which were high skilled in fighting from their horses.  It seemed impossible to knock them down with weapons.

races, creeds, colors, religions, and national origins had equal
opportunity to get shot, poisoned, captured, crippled, and killed
during the war, and those that came back alive were not satisfied
to accept unequal treatment and opportunity at home after it was
over.
