West African cities such as Timbuktu, became major centres of culture and trade as the Trans-Saharan trade went through them and led to people of of kinds of culture meeting there to trade.

Religion - especially Islam - spread into West Africa as a result of the trans-Saharan trade as most of the merchants were Muslim.
