The narrative of medieval writers was structured in a story within a story that generally manifested as accounts of the lives of saints, surrounded by a moralizing and exemplary purpose. Thus, given such intentions, they were produced within the monasteries and many of them written in Latin.
Most of the medieval writers used to structure a narrative by using a story within a story. This literary device can have its origin traced back to a device similar device that is known as a "frame story", where a supplemental story is used to help the narrator to tell the main story.
