America was still expanding and needed more land to do so. The president was already attempting to purchase California, so showing that we could take Texas furthered his goal there as well. Settlers in Texas feared loss of their land. So the president was cajoling Mexico into forgoing all rights.</span>
I cannot see this cartoon but based on your description i would say that one theme would be that Reagan and Gorbachev did not get along well as two world leaders

I would think it would be Thomas Paine. It was primarily the ideas of Thomas Paine that Jefferson drew upon while drafting the Declaration of Independence, since in "Common Sense" (one of Paine's writings), Paine had explained why independence from Britain was necessary.
