The French and Indian War changed North Americas relationship with the British, because even after all their help with Britain with the war the relationship between the two would become severed due to the fact Britain began to start taxing the colonies because of how in debt they were after the war. Not only this, but the Royal Proclamation of 1763 kept the American colonies from moving west over the mountains. If they did, it was British belief that it would be hard to regulate trade and taxes, and that their resources would be too thin. This is only a fraction of the effects the French and Indian War had on North America. Hope that helps a little.

Well like the Associate Justices, the Chief Justice is appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate. There is no requirement that the Chief Justice served as an Associate Justice, but 5 of the 17 Chief Justices have served on the Court as Associate Justices prior to becoming Chief Justice.
