Although more and the king were friends more held his religious beliefs above his friendship with the king. Henry wanted a divorce and Thomas would not grant him one. Henry then outlawed catholicism in England and beheaded his friend thomas. religion was then at the whim of the monarchy. if a king didn't like it the official religion would change to fit what the monarchy wanted. protestant ism became the official religion of England.
