enough. The people had vanished. Mad terror had scattered them, men, women, and children, through the bush, and they had never returned. What became of the hens I don’t know either. I should think the cause of progress got them, anyhow. However, through this glorious affair I got my appointment, before I had fairly begun to hope for it.

In the book there is a part where Odysseus makes it back to his homeland where he meets with the goddess Athene. She herself was disguised as a young shepherd to approach him and then reveals to him her true identity. She then disguises Odysseus to take back his home.


Athena tells Odysseus she will disguise him as a beggar, because she is the master of disguises and no one likes to look too closely at beggars anyway.
