On May 17, 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its Brown v. Board of Education decision declaring segregated schools to be unconstitutional. However, on Sept 4, 1957, the governor Orval Faubus had the Arkansas National Guard support segregation and prevent the 9 black students from entering the high school. On Sept 24, 1957 President Eisenhower ordered the 101st Airborne Division (without its black soldiers) to Little Rock.
