Their attention spans had been worn down by continuously shortening shows on TV and giving the people exactly what they want when they want it. Books are too much work for very little gain. They cannot understand people who get enjoyment from reading, and when one does not understand something, they are inherently afraid of it. So naturally, they become afraid of readers, and want them out of their lives. The government helps them do that, so they trust their leaders to that point and let them go about their work, as it means that they continue to be happy.
