It depends on the culture, in some cultures they are disciplinarians, and in other cultures they are overly religious, and some cultures can be very care free just live life type of culture. The ugly face of discipline is abuse, the ugly face of being overly religious is fundamentalism, and the ugly face of being care free is lack of care. The good side of discipline is self control/and right from wrong. The good side of religion is that it gives you a moral/ethical code to live by, and the good side of carefree is lack of stress. Point being, it all depends on the parents, and if they care enough to raise their kid in a way that benefits them and does not ruin them.
