Hirohito nasceu em 1901. Foi o primeiro imperador em séculos cuja mãe biológica era a esposa oficial do imperador anterior. Assim, como manda a tradição imperial japonesa, Hirohito foi separado de seus pais ainda muito jovem para ser instruído por tutores designados.

No ano de 1926, após a morte de seu pai, foi nomeado imperador com o título de Showa, que significa "paz ilustrada". O começo de seu reinado foi caracterizado pela ascensão do poder militar sobre o governo, permitindo que os militares controlassem a política japonesa.

Durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial, Hirohito passou uma imagem que logo resultou em algo completamente diferente. É certo que seu caráter era reservado e contido, diferente de outros generais japoneses. Sem mais obstruções, após a sua morte, foram liberados diversos documentos que o implicam diretamente como o responsável pelo ingresso do Japão na Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Hirohito sentia que seu país estava sendo relegado após a Primeira Guerra Mundial, acusando um suposto racismo por parte das potências ocidentais. Somado a isso, estava a "educação anti-japonês" que,  segundo Hirohito, era praticada na China.  No ano de 1938,  o imperador autorizou o uso de armas químicas contra a população chinesa. Mais tarde, Hirohito assinaria a ordem em que decretava guerra contra os Países Baixos, Reino Unido e Estados Unidos, caso suas exigências de livre trânsito entre a China e a Indochina não fossem aceitas.

Apesar das recomendações do Primeiro Ministro japonês, que era muito receoso de iniciar uma guerra contra os Estados Unidos e os países da Commonwealth, Hirohito decidiu declarar guerra a todos os aliados, dando sua aprovação oficial em 01 de dezembro de 1941, durante a Conferência Imperial celebrada em Tóquio. Sete dias mais tarde, conduziu um ataque simultâneo a Pearl Harbor e ao sudeste asiático.

No início de 1945, após diversas derrotas japonesas, o Imperador iniciou uma série de reuniões pessoais com os mais altos oficiais de seu governo, afim de avaliar o progresso da guerra. Hirohito buscava, no entanto, uma "tennozan" (uma grande vitória) para conseguir uma posição mais forte na hora de negociar, de forma que rechaçou a recomendação de seu primeiro ministro e seguiu os desejos belicistas dos oficiais japoneses.

Em 15 de agosto de 1945, após o bombardeio nuclear, Hirohito anunciou sua rendição por rádio. Aquele dia foi uma primeira vez que a população japonesa escutava a voz do Imperador. Após o discurso via rádio, muitos aviadores e militares japoneses se suicidaram.

Durante os Julgamentos de Tóquio, Hirohito intemação em seu favor. Isso ocorreu com a intervenção do general Douglas MacArthur, que insistiu em conservar Hirohito no trono como símbolo de continuidade para o povo japonês, facilitando assim a aceitação da ocupação norte-americana.

Durante o pós-guerra, Hirohito manteve-se nos bastidores. Governou até 1989, ano em que morreu.
