It’s CONOCES because when using conoce, we normally say it meaning “recognize” and sabes normally means to “know” something or someone. so when u use conoce in the sentence, you are saying “do you recognize California” which makes more sense than using sabes which is like saying “do you know California.” Hope that helped!
