<u>Answer:</u> NH_4^+ is an acid, CN^- is a base, NH_3 is conjugate base and HCN is conjugate acid

<u>Explanation:</u>

According to Bronsted and Lowry's theory:

An acid is defined as a proton donor while a base is defined as a proton acceptor.

In a chemical reaction, an acid loses a proton to form a conjugate base while a base accepts a proton to form conjugate acid.

For the given chemical reaction:

NH_4^+(aq)+CN^-(aq)\rightleftharpoons HCN(aq)+NH_3(aq)

NH_4^+ is losing a proton thus it is an acid to form NH_3 which is its conjugate base

CN^- is gaining a proton thus it is a base to form HCN which is its conjugate acid

Hence, NH_4^+ is an acid, CN^- is a base, NH_3 is conjugate base and HCN is conjugate acid

What is the excess reactant in the combustion of 23 g of methane in the open atmosphere?
Marta_Voda [28]

Answer : The excess reactant in the combustion of methane in opem atmosphere is O_{2} molecule.

Solution : Given,

Mass of methane = 23 g

Molar mass of methane = 16.04 g/mole

The Net balanced chemical reaction for combustion of methane is,

CH_4(g)+2O_2(g)\rightarrow CO_2(g)+2H_2O(g)

First we have to calculate the moles of methane.

\text{ Moles of methane}=\frac{\text{ Given mass of methane}}{\text{ Molar mass of methane}} = \frac{23g}{16.04g/mole} = 1.434 moles

From the above chemical reaction, we conclude that

1 mole of methane react with the 2 moles of oxygen

and 1.434 moles of methane react to give \frac{2moles\times 1.434moles}{1moles} moles of oxygen

The Moles of oxygen = 2.868 moles

Now we conclude that the moles of oxygen are more than the moles of methane.

Therefore, the excess reactant in the combustion of methane in open atmosphere is O_{2} molecule.

Blank #1: Polyatomic

Blank #2: 2 (see explanation)

Blank #3: 1 (see explanation)

<h3>Explanation</h3>

Both the ammonium ion \text{NH}_4^{+} and the sulfate ion \text{SO}_4^{2-} contain more than one atom in each ion. The two species are thus <em>polyatomic</em>. The chloride ion \text{Cl}^{-}, for example, is <em>monoatomic</em>.

Superscripts above formulae of the ions indicate their charge. Each ammonium ion carries a positive one (+1) charge. Each sulfate ion carries a charge of negative two (-2).

Ammonium sulfate is an ionic compound. A sample of this compound contain myriads of ammonium ions and sulfate ions. The ions are packed in three-dimensional lattices. Thus unlike water, ammonium sulfate does not exist as molecules in nature.

Assuming that the second and third blanks refers to a formula unit, rather than a molecule, of ammonium sulfate. The empirical formula of ammonium sulfate gives the minimum whole-number ratio between the two ions in a sample.

Charges shall balance between the two ions. Ammonium ions are of charge +1. Sulfate ions are of charge -2. The sample shall thus contain two ammonium ions for every one sulfate ion.

The empirical formula of ammonium sulfate is therefore (\text{NH}_4)_2\text{SO}_4.

There are thus two ammonium ions \text{NH}_4^{+} and one sulfate ion \text{SO}_4^{2-} in each formula unit of ammonium sulfate.

Which particles conduct electricity in graphite
mylen [45]

Explanation:

Graphite is an electrical conductor, hence useful in such applications as arc lamp electrodes. It can conduct electricity due to the vast electron delocalization within the carbon layers (a phenomenon called aromaticity). These valence electrons are free to move, so are able to conduct electricity.
