Section 4.6 Exponential and Logarithmic Models
While we have explored some basic applications of exponential and logarithmic functions, in this section we explore some important applications in more depth.
Radioactive Decay
In an earlier section, we discussed radioactive decay – the idea that radioactive isotopes change over time. One of the common terms associated with radioactive decay is half- life.
Half Life
The half-life of a radioactive isotope is the time it takes for half the substance to decay.
Given the basic exponential growth/decay equation h(t) = abt , half-life can be found by solving for when half the original amount remains; by solving 1 a = a(b)t , or more
2
simply 1 = bt . Notice how the initial amount is irrelevant when solving for half-life. 2
Example 1
Bismuth-210 is an isotope that decays by about 13% each day. What is the half-life of Bismuth-210?
We were not given a starting quantity, so we could either make up a value or use an unknown constant to represent the starting amount. To show that starting quantity does not affect the result, let us denote the initial quantity by the constant a. Then the decay of Bismuth-210 can be described by the equation Q(d) = a(0.87)d .
To find the half-life, we want to determine when the remaining quantity is half the original: 1a. Solving,
2
1 a = a(0.87)d 2
1 = 0.87d 2
1 d log2=log(0.87 )
Divide by a,

What is the area of the parallelogram ?
qwelly [4]

Answer:

<h2>45 in²</h2>

Step-by-step explanation:

Formula:

area of a parallelogram = base × height

==================================

By reading the figure :

base = 15

height = 3

Therefore,

The area of the parallelogram = 15 × 3

                                                  = 45

Tyler and Bethany have a 240 feet of fencing with which to build a garden Tyler wants the garden to be in the shape of a square
Andrej [43]
If the garden were in the shape of a square, all of its sides would be of equal length. so if you divide 240 by 4 sides, each one would be 60 feet. Then, to find the square garden's area, you multiply 60 x 60 = 360 feet².

If the garden was 50 by 70, you would multiply the two values together to find the area, which is 350 feet².

Because 360 > 350 , Tyler's design would yield the maximum area for a garden
Hope this helps :)

Joan and her brother Justin left a hotel at the same time, driving in opposite directions at constant rates. After traveling for
inessss [21]

Answer:

Joan drive with a speed of 55 miles per hour.

Step-by-step explanation:

Given:- Travelling time (t) = 4 hours.

Travelled distance (d) = 480 miles.

Speed of Justin is 10 miles per hour faster than Joan.

To find:- Speed of Joan = ?

Solution:-

Let speed of Joan be x,

therefore speed of Justin = x+10          ---------------(from given)

Now, Total speed of Joan and Justin = x+x+10

Total speed of Joan and Justin = 2x+10 ------------(1)

Now formula for speed is,

Speed = \frac{distance}{time}

2x+10=\frac{480}{4}                        -------------(from 1 and given)

2x+10=120

2x=120-10

2x=110

\therefore x=\frac{110}{2}

\therefore x= 55

as x is the speed of Joan,

Therefore Joan drive with a speed of 55 miles per hour.

Fantom [35]
If you were to find the constant rate, you would have to take 4.5 and divide it into 234 to get the answer

You would get 52 as the constant speed
