Solution:

Given, A quilt is 72 inches wide and 96 inches long.  

The blocks have 4 inch sides

Finding number of blocks run across the width of quilt:

$\text { number of blocks across width }=\frac{\text { width of quilt }}{\text { length of each block }}$

$=\frac{72}{4}=18 \text { blocks }$

Finding number of blocks run across length:

$\text { number of blocks across length }=\frac{\text { length of quilt }}{\text { width of each block }}$

$=\frac{96}{4}=24 \text { blocks. }$

Finding number of blocks run up and down the length of the quilt:

$\text { number of blocks run up and down }=2 \times \text { number of blocks across length }$

$=2 \times 24=48 \text { blocks }$

Hence, there are 18 blocks across width and 48 blocks run up and down the length of quilt
