I'm not for sure on this, but I'd say it's because the people in The Alamo are outnumbered and out trained by the Mexican army.
Personally, I would choose a bayonet in a hand to hand combat fight. Rifles are just for a far distance. If the person is close to you they can easily take it from you but then if it's a bayonet and you know how to use it then they won't take it from you unless they are some bad a** people.
