In your own words, describe the Continental System.

Answer:

The Continental System was set up by Napoleon Bonaparte, which saw to the French blockading Great Britain from having access to the rest of Europe. It also saw to trading routes for main European countries to trade in between each other. However, it was not as effective, as Great Britain had significantly better navy, which enhanced their blockade, as well as provided them with blockade runners. The Continental System, at the end, was a failure.

The crisis came about primarily because of an inefficient and unfair tax structure, outdated medieval bureaucratic institutions, and a drained treasury which was the result of aiding the Americans during the American Revolution, long wars with England, overspending, and an inequitable tax system which placed the burden of taxation on those least able to pay, the Third Estate.
