In 1740–1741 extremely cold temperatures struck vast areas of pre-industrial Europe, causing harvest failures that led to increa

sed prices for staple food, famine, disease, excess mortality and migration. . . . Ireland was probably more vulnerable than most other European countries. Already in the first half of the eighteenth century, Irish food production was based heavily on potatoes and oats – a pattern of cultivation providing little resilience against the risk of harvest failure after an extremely cold winter. . . . Ireland was ill-prepared to deal with the consequences of harvest failure . . . Involvement in war (with Spain), religious conflicts, and the exclusion of the Catholic majority from political participation likewise affected food entitlements of large parts of the population. As a result, Ireland experienced excess mortality.
–"The Irish Famine of 1740–1741,"
S. Engler, et al.

According to this passage, what were the causes of the 1740 famine in Ireland? Check all that apply.

extremely cold temperatures
a food supply dependent upon two crops
lower than normal mortality
war and religious conflict
protestants being excluded from political participation

Answer:

The “Great Frost” of 1740 was one of the coldest winters of the eighteenth century and impacted many coun- tries all over Europe. The years 1740–1741 have long been known as a period of general crisis caused by harvest failures, high prices for staple foods, and excess mortality.

Rufina [12.5K]

The correct answer is D. Chattahoochee River

Explanations.

The Chattahoochee River is a river located in the Southern of the U.S. and is part of the border of three states: Georgia, Florida, and Alabama. Because of this, te Chattachooche River plays an important role in all the three states not only because it crosses different cities but also due to the attempts to preserve the river and the use of water in it. This had led to different controversies and disputes between the three states in the last decades as each state claims ownership over the river and therefore its right to use this natural resource. Therefore, the one that is likely to be the source of this legal battle is Chattahoochee River, because due to its location Alabama, Georgia, and Florida claim ownership over the river.

More powerful air force radar and message decoding technologies.

The Germans made efforts to bomb Royal Air Force airfields and take out Britain's radar defense system, but the outnumbered RAF fighters managed to outmaneuver their opponents, aided by radar technology.

As for message decoding technologies, the code-cracking machine developed by Alan Turing had an impact particularly on naval battles in the Atlantic between the Germans and the Allies.  Once they developed the ability to decode German messages, the British had to proceed carefully and not act on every military message or the Germans would have suspected their encoded messages were being hacked.
