Functionalists believe that state of mind that exist in people mind consist of the awareness on their perspective function in society.
As people held more important functions among social group, those people tend to be held on higher social standing by other members.

For most cases, norm violation usually do not resulted in direct legal implication for the actors, but would almost certainly resulted in negative perception that's given by other members of the social group.
