Un ejemplo de necesidad individual que requiere de la sociedad para ser satisfecha es la educación pública.  La educación es algo que no podemos resolver individualmente ya que requiere el financiamiento del costo de  mantener  una escuela. Es por eso que  los integrantes de la sociedad pagan impuestos al Estado para generar los recursos necesarios que permitan financiar la satisfacción de las necesidades individuales a través de los servicios públicos.

Las necesidades individuales pueden ser primarias, en referencia a las actividades necesarias para la subsitencia de las personas, como la respiración, la alimentación, dormir o abrigarse. Sin las necesidades primarias la vida humana no es sustentable. Estan necesidades suelen ser consideradas como derechos fundamentales. Otras actividades, como estudiar, y trabajar, son consideradas necesidades secundarias.
