He is afraid people will see through the façade he has built, see the true Gatsby: an uneducated man whose fortune comes from selling illegal alcohol. On the inside, Gatsby is far from being a gentleman or from being cool. He is scared, tense, eager, almost desperate. He wants to be seen, but he also fears it tremendously.
